Kevin Fogolin and his 13-year-old black lab Maddy take five after a rescue demo during Avalanche Awareness Day at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort Jan. 14. The partners were members of the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA) for 10 years before recently retiring.

Highly trained CARDA dogs are an important part of the avalanche rescue package. With super sensitive noses, incredible agility and stamina, they only need 30 minutes to course search a hectare of avalanche terrain. A human probe line averages four hours to do the same work.

Be very mindful of the way you speak to your dog when you train him. Dogs can pick up how you are feeling. A disciplinary command is best delivered in a stern tone.

Consistency is key during your training sessions. Pick a single word or gesture for each command, action or behavior and use it exclusively. Your dog can learn to associate a command with a particular behavior, but if you keep changing the command associated with a behavior, you’ll confuse him and he won’t do what you want him to do. Remember to be consistent about what commands you use and what behaviors you expect in every training session. Doing this will ensure that your pet is a well trained animal, and it will shorten the time span for learning too.
