Training a dog can seem hard, confusing or overwhelming for a person that has never gone through it. There are so many resources available, that you may not know where to begin. Here are some tips to get you started.

You must understand what will motivate your dog if you want to be able to train him. You are both learning something about each other and what each of you expects out of each other. Be sure that you are giving your dog a wide assortment of different training exercises and be lavish with your praise and support. A happy dog will perform better.

If you have a large dog, and he likes to stretch out, get the dog a big bed. You can buy a large bed for your large-breed dog, or even get a crib mattress to use as your dog’s bed. A crib mattress has advantages; one being that you can use crib sheets and then change them as needed. Another good thing is that crib mattresses have a moisture-proof cover.

Most cases of dog bites are a result of fear biting. This is common behavior for a dog that feels as if he is trapped, threatened, or scared. Force should never be used when training your dog. This could result in you being bitten. He will be eager to please you and view you as the leader.

Give your dog new challenges often. Quiz him to see if he remembers the commands, even if you’re already sure he does.

Encourage your dog to be as active as possible. Dogs can get bored quite easily. Dogs with no enthusiasm will be harder to train than active dogs. Your dog will be more relaxed and willing to listen if he is exercised frequently. A long walk or a brisk run are great ways to get rid of some of your dog’s excess energy.

If your dog suddenly starts misbehaving for no apparent reason, it is essential to take him to a veterinarian to see if an underlying health problem is the cause of the negative behavior. If an animal is suffering from pain or an undiagnosed condition, it may react aggressively to certain stimuli or behave in an atypical manner. Since dogs can’t communicate, this is how they let you know there is something wrong.

Keeping your dog active is an important part of successful dog training and is also good for their health. Dogs are not sedentary animals. Dogs need to have time to run around so they are happy and healthy. Take your pet to the dog park or help him learn a new skill that keeps him active, such as playing fetch with tennis balls or catching a Frisbee in mid-flight. Keep your dog well entertained and you will eliminate many of the common problems, such as chewing on shoes.

When house training your pup, you should adhere to a regular schedule of feeding and elimination. This can help you avoid accidents on the carpet by becoming aware of when the dog needs to go. A schedule is a great way to train a dog how to hold in their needs till they can go out.

Always take a dog for a nice long walk if you will be gone for several hours at a time. By exhausting them, you will help them handle the inevitable separation anxiety they have when you leave.

These tips probably got you brainstorming about how you will train your dog. Following the advice contained in this article will lead to your being a happy canine owner with a properly trained companion.
